Energy-Efficient Simonton Windows Are Top Choice of NAHB Certified Green Building Professional Powell Construction

PARKERSBURG, W. VA. - Since 1996 Greg Powell has brought his "green hammer" to Powell Construction Services, LLC. An NAHB Certified Green Professional, Powell makes every product purchase with green on his mind. For the windows in his homes --- including his family's new residence --- he selects energy-efficient Simonton vinyl windows.

"During the past 12 years, more than 95 percent of the homes we've built have included Simonton products," says Powell, whose company is headquartered in St. Joseph, Mich. "These windows and doors help us meet or exceed the NAHB Model Green Home Building Guidelines so that all of our homes are certified Green Built™."

For his own waterfront home, Powell and his wife Vicki selected 57 Simonton ProFinish® Brickmould 600 windows and three sliding patio doors. Designed by Marla Bruemmer, owner of Design Evolutions, the home features massive walls of windows that connect homeowners with the outdoors.

With a HERS rating of 53, Powell's 5+ ENERGY STAR® rated home is also certified NAHB green guidelines Gold Level. His annual heating and cooling bills are less than $950. Despite the frigid Michigan winters, when temperatures can remain below freezing for weeks at a time, the Powells are warm and comfortable in their 2,600-square foot home.

"Sunlight streaming through these windows energizes us," says Powell. "We leave the windows unadorned so we have continual views up and down the river. The home is designed with many high windows for views of the sky that allow us to connect with the natural setting."

Powell selected the Simonton ProFinish Brickmould 600 products for his own home because of his preference for the window's durability and style. Designed for new construction applications, the versatile windows include an applied flat exterior casing to replicate the look of traditional wood windows, but with all the low-maintenance features of vinyl windows.

"These windows have all the advantages both my clients and I are seeking," says Powell. "The window frames are made of high-quality vinyl that requires minimal long-term maintenance and provides exceptional energy-efficiency features. The vinyl frames have a longer life cycle than other frame types (such as wood and aluminum) so they don't need to be replaced as often. Plus they never need painting, sanding or staining and they resist insects, decay and rot."

Now that his personal home retreat is finished, Powell and his team are excited to be selected as the exclusive home builder in a new 58-lot subdivision within a major Southwest Michigan development called Harbor Shores. On the banks of the Paw Paw River and bordering a Jack Nicholas Signature Golf Course, the 58 upscale cottages will all have a green focus. "Of course we'll have Simonton windows in the project, along with a wide variety of other green products that will help make these homes energy efficient, comfortable and affordable."

Powell Construction focuses on seven key areas for their Green Built homes: lot design, preparation and development; resource efficiency; energy efficiency; indoor/outdoor water use; indoor environmental quality; operation, maintenance and homeowner education and global impact. The Green Built homes are certified by an independent, third party inspector who reviews all aspects of the home from the planning stage through competition. Points are earned through a scoring system within each key area, earning homes the overall designation as a Gold, Silver or Bronze rated home.
